Work of art

produced by a tiny little bird.

Location: under the roof in the shed. It's a "Willie Wagtail" and pretty common here.

Apropos guard dog
2011-11-12 14:20
Last week around noon the guinea fowls suddenly came fluttering and chatting to my house door - VERY loud and VERY excited. They didn't stop so I went outside where I discovered two workers who installed a number in front of the property (finally every house gets its own number - although there is still no post delivery).

Clare was relaxing in the backyard and didn't say a peep.

New 'Reality Show'
2011-10-30 16:16
Clare is fascinated by our new housemates.

She took a great fancy to the chicken.

Meanwhile Kitty was chased by the guinea fowls and the peacocks.

With animals life never gets boring!

Pregnant with chicken II
2011-10-26 11:49
They did me the favour and waited for the next day, so I was able to watch the whole hatching process.

What a hard work. The 3rd chicken didn't proceed so a couple of hours later I peeled the shell off and delivered the week little creature. Nevertheless it caught up and is doing fine now.

Pregnant with chicken
2011-10-23 23:58
I tried to hatch 6 eggs of my New Hampshire hen and - success! Today, after 20 days in a provisional incubator, a little hole appeared in 3 of the eggs and a gentle twittering could be heard. Now it's 10 p.m. and I will go to bed. See you tomorrow little birds!

Spring is in the air
2011-10-12 23:31
I really love the Australian birds but the melodic song by a Blackbird (an immigrant like me) gives some cosy feelings.

Local residents:

Australian Raven (with impressive blue eyes) pinching a bit of Clare's bone.

Crested Pigeons balancing on the power line and watching me feeding the chooks.

Tomcat
2011-09-28 14:03
3 days ago I went to the council to hire a cat trap.

"...A person may lawfully seize an unidentified cat, providing that it is delivered within 12 hours to a registered Veterinary Surgeon or a Cat Management Officer .... An individual is not authorized to destroy a cat...."

I don't want to 'destroy' a cat but there is a big black-and-white tomcat roaming on my property. As soon as he takes notice of me he is running away. But when he is moving in a slow pace he is hobbling on three feet. So I borrowed this trap (free of charge for 7 days). Yesterday evening I was able to catch him - and this was a really wild cat! It took me hours to anaesthetize him through the trap wire. He was fighting like a lion and the amount of narcotics was at least 4 times higher than in a 'normal' cat. The reason of his lameness was an old but good healed fracture of his paw including the loss of 3 toes - it was not necessary to intervene. I castrated him, cleaned his ears and administered a flea protection. The night was chilly therefore I wrapped him in a towel and laid him in the back yard. In the morning he was gone - the only reminder of him was his vomit on the towel (consisting of poultry fodder!). Now I'm keen to see whether he will come back eating the leftovers of Kitty.

Sob!
2011-09-21 16:30
This morning I discovered this little corps underneath the nest of 'my' Welcome Swallows.

I couldn't help but I had to check the content of the nest again so I climbed the chair. One young was in there (remember: last week I saw 3 eggs). The literature describes that the parents are warming their offspring (http://www.wiresnr.org/swallows) but the two swallows are not looking after their child at all. They sit on a wire next by singing a song and cleaning their plumage. Cruel parents.

Welcome Swallows
2011-09-14 18:22
In August (01.08.) a pair of Welcome Swallows decided to build their new home under my roof.

It took approx. 5 days to complete the nest and since then they are around my place.

Last Monday (12.09.) I rescued their property: a bird (I only saw the back - it was dark and I think it was a Noisy Miner) was sitting nearby and the two swallows were extremely excited. They flew attacks one after another against the bird and they were shouting as loud as they could with their tiny loungs. I drove the intruder away from the nest and the swallows calmed down.

Today I was very naughty: I climbed up a chair and had a look into the nest. 3 white eggs with purple spots were laying in a fluffy bed of soft tissue.
