Bad mood
2011-07-06 20:11
Today he got me 3 times! Is it the stormy weather or what? I'm the one who is looking after his girls, spending a lot of money to present three different kind of food each day, carrying 15 l fresh water daily to the chooks run and cleaning up once a month and providing soft bedding in form of a bale of straw. And instead of being thankful he got me! Jumping upon me from the back and kicks his spurs into my thighs. It really hurts! Bad boy.

New housemate?
2011-06-02 20:24
It depends on whether I will purchase the property I fall in love with. This Brushtail possum and her offspring is living in the backyard totally 'wild'.

Good appetite!

Remote
2011-05-19 16:22
I chose to live in a remote area. No cars, no neighbours, even no post delivery - just quiet and pieceful 24/7.
But the price is high if an emergency occurs. Yesterday morning one of the peacocks got trapped between the branches of a gumtree.

I called the emergency number 000 and it took 10 min until the person on the other end of the telephone line finally was able to identify my address and promised to send someone. 45 min later no help in sight. I called the police in the next "town". They assured if the fire brigade is informed they will come. But they didn't come (perhaps they would have come if a human life is endangered). I stopped a truckdriver and he climbed up the tree and freed the poor bird.
The foot was only hanging on a small piece of tissue - an open fracture of the tibiotarsus. I operated the injury (without anaesthesia) but the chance is less than 50 % that the foot is still alive. The next couple of days are crucial. Today I changed the bandages and the smell from the wound was not really encouraging.

Hard work
2011-04-23 21:37
Today I watched one of my hens (Claire) laying an egg. It was a very hard work. She was moaning like a woman in labour.
A quiet place to do the job (underneath a straw bale):

Squeeeeezing:

Result - a perfect wonder of nature (and this nearly every day!)

Also growing up
2011-04-22 14:25
Since a couple of weeks the gender of my beautiful peacocks are obvious: I got two males and one female.

They are eating (and shitting) like a Rottweiler, so I'm not unhappy when they decided to sleep on the roof of the shed and not longer in the relatively small chook run.

On death row
2011-04-17 00:26
I'm awfully sorry but this housemate expects a very short life. It will pay it's debt to nature.

Weigh-in:
2011-03-29 22:49
185 g today - a total gain of 1 g in 14 days!

When I picked it up it was weighing 184 g, then it lost 16 g even it was eating but now luckily its gaining weight. On the other hand the little fellow is much more alert then before. Especially in the evening it starts flapping its wings and crying for its companions.

Another catastrophy occured this afternoon. On my way home after work I found a Sleepy Lizard on the road. A car run over its snout - the prognosis is not so good, it lost a lot of blood.

The 23rd of March 2011: Elizabeth Taylor and my little possum died!
12 days of hard try, sleepless nights, ups and downs and finally I lost the battle.

Good sleep.

Good appetite.

A really weird experience
2011-03-11 22:16
At 2 p.m. a woman called me to pick up a little possum which she found in the morning. When I drove along the gravel road I recognised a Galah sitting near the edge of the street and when I approached the bird it didn't flew away. So I stopped to have a look whether it might have been injured. The little fellow adjourned to the bushes where I discovered a second Galah. After the first bird presented his companion to me it flew away! The second bird was very weak and easy to catch. So I drove home with two creatures: an approximately 8 weeks old pinky possum and a starving cockatoo.

Last year in September
2011-03-04 19:06
I was driving along the gravel road when - about 50 m ahead - I saw a cat running across the street. I don't know why but I decided to stop and to have a look where she disappeared. There she was sitting: a tabby cat in-between the scrubs meowing miserable. I tried to lift her and other than expected this was no problem. In the car she startet to nibble at the seats so I postponed my actual plans and drove straight away to the next IGA market buying some whiskas tins and dry food. She was eating like mad. At home I weighed her: 2.25 kg! According to her teeth she was an adult cat (should weigh around 4 kg) and besides that she already gave birth: her teats were enlarged and a putrid discharge appeared on her vagina. The next 4 weeks she was eating, sleeping, eating, sleeping,...
Meanwhile she is desexed and healthy. But she still likes to sleep.

Clare likes to "play" with Kitty and the cat is patient with the wild puppy.
